What Young People Can Expect

A key focus of this camp is giving young people the chance to take part in activities they may not have tried before. We want every participant to feel that they are starting from the same place, without pressure to already be “good” at a particular sport.

This is especially important at the beginning of the camp. On Day 1, activities will be designed to help young people settle in, get to know others, build confidence and feel comfortable in the group. The aim is to reduce social pressure and avoid young people being judged by popularity, existing friendship groups or who is already known as the best at a particular sport.

Football, basketball and other familiar sports may still be included, but they will be delivered in a way that focuses on enjoyment, teamwork and participation rather than ability, competition or status.

The programme is designed to allow different young people to shine in different ways. Some may enjoy sport, some may enjoy creative tasks, some may grow in confidence through teamwork, and others may simply benefit from being in a safe, positive and welcoming environment.

The staff and participants will support one another and allow our young people to take part at their own pace. Nobody needs to be the best. The most important thing is to show respect, get involved and be open to learning.

Girls-Only Sessions

Girls-only sessions are a key part of this programme.

These sessions are designed to provide a safe, welcoming and encouraging space for girls to participate, build confidence and enjoy being active without pressure or comparison.

We understand that some girls may feel less confident joining in certain sports or mixed activities, especially if they have had negative experiences before or feel worried about being judged. The girls-only sessions will help create space for girls to try activities, develop skills, express themselves, make friends and feel supported.

The aim is not only to increase participation, but also to help girls feel confident, valued and visible within the camp.

Girls will also be encouraged to take part in the wider mixed programme, with support from coaches to make sure they feel included, respected and comfortable.

Behaviour and Expectations

To help keep the camp safe, positive and enjoyable for everyone, we ask all young people to:

Leave any problems at the door when they arrive

Treat others with respect
Listen to coaches and staff
Take part with a positive attitude
Use appropriate language
Look after the venue and equipment
Support and encourage others
Respect people’s differences
Allow others to participate without judgement

The camp is a safe and inclusive space. Bullying, discrimination, intimidation or unsafe behaviour will not be accepted.

Our coaches will work with young people to create a positive group culture where everyone feels welcome and able to join in.

Staff and Safeguarding

The programme will be delivered by qualified and first aid trained coaches who are DBS checked.

The whole team is committed to safeguarding and to creating a positive environment where young people feel safe, valued and able to participate.

If a young person has any worries during camp, they can speak to a coach or member of staff at any time.

Parents and carers are also encouraged to contact the camp staff if there is anything we should know that may help us support their child.

Final Note

We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to the camp.

This is a great opportunity for young people to stay active, try new activities, meet new people, build confidence and enjoy a safe and supportive community programme.

Our goal is for every young person to leave feeling more confident, more connected and proud of what they have taken part in.

Warm regards,

Kieron Campbell

The camp will run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 28 July to 20 August, from 10am–2pm. This programme has been designed to give young people a positive, safe and welcoming space to stay active, build confidence, meet new people and try a wide range of sports, creative activities and team challenges during the school holidays. The camp is open to young people of all abilities. No previous sporting experience is needed. Whether a young person already enjoys sport, wants to build confidence, is looking to try something new, or simply wants to be part of a fun and supportive environment, this camp has been created to help them feel welcome and encouraged. A key aim of the programme is to reduce barriers to participation. We want young people to feel that they can take part without pressure, comparison or judgement. Sessions will include a mix of familiar activities such as football, basketball and athletics, alongside activities that young people may not have tried before, including dance, podcasts, adapted games, team challenges, multi-sports and confidence-building activities. The camp will place a strong focus on helping young people try new things. This is especially important at the start of the programme, where activities will be designed to help participants settle in, mix with others and feel part of the group without existing friendship groups, ability levels or sporting reputations taking over. A key feature of the camp will be girls-only sessions. These sessions are designed to create a safe, encouraging and supportive space for girls to take part, build confidence, try activities, develop skills and feel represented within the programme. Alongside mixed sessions, the girls-only sessions will help ensure that girls have dedicated opportunities to participate, be heard and enjoy being active in an environment that feels comfortable and empowering. These sessions will predominantly be led by female coaches too. The programme will be delivered by qualified and first aid trained coaches, who are also DBS checked. The Active Edge team is experienced in working with young people and is committed to creating an environment where every participant feels safe, respected and supported to get involved at their own pace. This camp is not just about sport. It is about giving young people a place where they can feel welcome, express themselves, build friendships, develop confidence, learn new skills and enjoy being active in a positive community setting. Why join the Active Edge camp? Free and fully funded There is no cost to attend, helping to make the programme accessible to local families. Safe, structured and supportive Sessions are led by qualified, first aid trained and DBS checked staff who prioritise young people’s safety, wellbeing and confidence. A wide range of activities Young people will take part in a mix of sports, creative activities, team challenges and new experiences, including football, basketball, athletics, dance, podcasts, multi-sports and more. A focus on trying new things The camp is designed to help young people step outside their comfort zone in a positive way, without pressure to already be good at a particular sport or activity. Girls-only sessions Female-led coaching to provide dedicated girls-only sessions will provide a safe and encouraging space for girls to participate, build confidence and enjoy being active. Confidence and personal development Young people will be supported to develop teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience and positive social skills. Inclusive and welcoming The camp is open to all abilities. Every young person will be encouraged to take part in a way that feels comfortable for them. Community impact The programme supports young people to stay active, make positive choices, build friendships and feel more connected to their local community.
